Office Web Apps Technical Preview

A few days ago, I wrote this article in German, here is now my translation for our english speaking friends. According to the Microsoft Office 2010 Newsgroup and the Microsoft Office 2010 Engineering Blog, the Office Web Apps have been made available and can be tested. Even if they primarly targeted a selected group of users, with a little trick, everyone who has an account on Windows Live can get access to the Office Web Apps.

At this stage, only Excel, Word, Powerpoint and OneNote are available. Actually the functionality is modest, but I think, they are working hard at Microsoft to implement more functions. By the way, according the french blog Backstage 2010, the official names of the apps will be „Excel Web App“, „Word Web App“, „PowerPoint Web App“ and „OneNote Web App“. The suite will be designated „Office Web App“.

In the rest of this article I will describe how to get access to the Office Web Apps TP from a German Windows Live account. As you probably know, I am participating in the technical preview of Office 2010. So, for testing if I can get access to the Office Web App from a regular Windows Live account, I created a new one.

In a first step, I opened http://skydrive.live.com in my browser. You can also use http://spaces.live.com, however, the first site will lead you more directly to the Office Web Apps.

Office Web Apps

The login takes me to my German homepage:

Office Web Apps

Now, let’s change the language. In my case, I had to choose „Optionen“ and then click on the language „Deutsch“. This may be similar for other languages.

Office Web Apps

You will then reach a page, where you can select between different languages. Please choose „English“ and confirm your selection, in my case by clicking on „Speichern“.

Office Web Apps

Our homepage should now appear in English and, among other things, we can see our folders with English names.

Office Web Apps

If we click on the folder „My Documents“, we are asked if we would like to upload some files. To do this, please click once on “Why not add some files?”. This takes us to a form from which we can select files from our computer and upload them.

Office Web Apps

I uploaded an already created file in Excel 2007. Then, we are asked, if we would like to participate to the Office Web Apps Technical Preview.

Office Web Apps

Sure, we still like to do this and click on “Join our preview program”. Now we just have to accept the terms of participation. Please read them carefully.

Office Web Apps

If we click on the icon of our uploaded file in our folder „My Documents“, we will reach a page as shown in the follwing picture. And we can see the two buttons „View“ and „Edit“.

Office Web Apps

We choose „Edit“ and a new view opens for editing the Excel file.

Office Web Apps

It looks really good, right? Let’s have a look what happens if we create a Word and a PowerPoint document. For this, we go back to our folder „My Documents“. By clicking on „New“, we can choose between four options.

Office Web Apps

If we choose “Microsoft PowerPoint presentation”, we have first to enter a name for the new document and confirm our choice with „Create“. The following picture shows PowerPoint with the new document loaded.

Office Web Apps

If we try to create a new Word document, we are informed that this feature is not available yet. However, we can view a document, as you can see in this sample.

Office Web Apps

Please note, if I try to change the language from English to German, I can see some labels already translated to German. However not all strings are displayed correctly. I recommend to use and test the Office Web Apps in English. In the next days, I will write about my first experiences with the Office Web Apps. I’m really excited and I’m looking forward to testing.
